Moving Out Guide

By AccommodationHannah 03 May 2024

Moving can be a stressful time. Below is some useful information and advice you can follow to ease any pressure.

  • Sort out your belongings. Moving is a great time to go through your belongings. You can work out what you want to keep and what you don't want to take with you.
  • Donate any belongings you don't need anymore. Make sure they're of good quality and, if food, within their use by dates. You can drop clothing and household items off at the Sustainability Hub on Frenchay campus or at the Bristol Big Give . Accommodation Services collect food (unopened dry or canned food only please) for the Trussell Trust at their Customer Service desks.
  • If you don't want to transport everything yourself arrange for a courier to pick up your belongings. They can help you move them to your next home or put them in storage, depending on their service. You can find more information on our Student Storage guide.
  • Deep clean everything. Make sure every room you are responsible for is as clean as you found it. This includes your bedroom, bathroom and kitchen space. Landlords often hold everyone responsible for the communal areas. If they don't meet their standards, you could have to pay a fee or have it deducted from your deposit.
  • Redirect your post and change your address. This way your post will be sent to your new address and you won't have to keep going back to where you used to live. If you live in UWE Accommodation, they return to sender anything that isn't collected by the time you move out.
  • If you have one, make sure you cancel or transfer your TV Licence. It’s really easy to do via the TV Licence website.

And finally, lock you door/s and windows, and return your keys. For UWE Accommodation, drop them off at any of our Customer Service desks. If you're living in the private sector, your landlord will let you know where to leave your keys.
