A Vibrant Lunar New Year Celebration at UWE

On Wednesday, 29th January, UWE students came together at Purdown View Café for a spectacular Lunar New Year celebration, marking the Year of the Snake with an evening full of music, dancing and food. From 17:30 to 21:00, the space buzzed with excitement as students celebrated, socialised, and immersed themselves in the spirit of the new year.

A Night of Festivities

The event was a collaborative effort between the Student Life and the Global team, ensuring that students who couldn’t travel home for the occasion still had a chance to experience the joy of Lunar New Year. The turnout was incredible, with students filling the venue, eager to join the celebration. We also had Sam, the president of Student Union (SU) with us for a couple of hours.

The café was beautifully decorated with red lanterns and handmade decorations created during the ‘Make a Paper Lantern’ event held earlier in the week. This added a personal touch, making the space feel even more festive and inviting.

Music, Dance, and Fortune Telling

Throughout the day, lion dance performances and other cultural activities took place across campus, building anticipation for the evening’s main celebration.

Inside the venue, the dance floor was alive, with students dancing non-stop to the beats provided by our fantastic DJ. Laughter and conversation filled the air as attendees enjoyed the music and each other’s company. A special performance from the Sri Lanka Society captivated the audience, adding to the richness.

For a playful way to welcome luck and prosperity in the new year, students could pick up a lucky card.

Bringing the Community Together

Beyond the performances and activities, the celebration was about bringing students together. Many expressed their appreciation for having a space to celebrate, especially those who couldn’t be with their families during this important time.

"It was amazing to have this event for students who couldn’t go home. The energy was incredible, and it really felt like a home away from home," shared one student.

With a fantastic mix of food, drinks and music, the evening ended on a high note, leaving everyone looking forward to future celebrations.
