It's Pride Month, and it's likely that every one of us knows, loves, or is a member of the LGBTQIA+ community.
Pride exists as a result of the brave acts of resistance by Stormé DeLarverie, Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P. Johnson, among others, during the Stonewall Riots of 1969.
Now, Pride is seen by many as more of a celebration than a protest, however its key purpose remains - and in today's world, this is developing increased relevance.
Celebration is an act of rebellion in and of itself - a sign that LGBTQIA+ people have every right to, and will, enjoy their lives, no matter what others may think, say or do.
We'd love to hear your stories of Joy for our zine. Whether you're a member of the community yourself, or would like to share an experience you've had at any point in your life which relates to LGBTQIA+ people or Pride.
Beautiful stories of coming out, allyship, friendship, romance, family or simple human kindness - all are welcome! You may like to submit a piece of writing, photo, piece of art, poem or anything else you can think of.
Please make submissions via the link by 25th June. We are hoping to have copies at our Pride Bunting showcase - if you would like to present your contribution there you would be incredibly welcome.
“How To” create a triangle for your community, in 4 easy steps.
Pride Bunting Poster
Step 1:
Using theeasuring a 20cm base and 29 cm height triangle on your fabric, cut out the triangles on your chosen fabric.
* remember one bunting triangle requires two (2) individual triangles.
Step 2:
Once you have cut your triangles out, line them up "wrong" sides together, pinning them along the ‘sew line’ shown on the template. If you measured your triangle onto your fabric, just make sure the pins are around 1cm in from the side edges.
* Note: you do not need to pin along the base of the triangle
Step 3:
Sew the sides of your triangles together, along the sew line, using your chosen method.
- Sewing machine
- Hand stitching
- Using an Overlocker
The pins will assist you keeping the triangles in place, while you sew the edges together.
*Remember to leave the base of the triangle open so we are able to put everyone’s creations on
the finished bunting.
Step 4:
Once complete (you can sew as many triangles as you like!) please turn inside out and press if needed. Then it's time to add your message of joy!
You can add a symbol, word(s), or picture - here are some suggestions:
If you are multilingual, we would LOVE international messages in other languages!
There are no restrictions on messages except that they MUST be positive. No negative, offensive, political, or targeted messages please!
Make sure to put all triangles together with a label stating your name and where you work/study (so we can make a credits list!) and take them to a drop-off point.
Thank you for celebrating pride month with us! We will be displaying the bunting at the end of pride month and bringing it with us on the Bristol pride parade on 12th July. Keep an eye out for further updates!
