The Great UWE Inter-Halls Recycling Challenge

Posted 3 days ago

Get involved and win!

From Green Week (3–11 November 2025) until 31 March 2026, UWE halls will go head-to-head in an inter-halls recycling competition — and your block could win a free pizza party!

We’ll post monthly leaderboard updates so you can see which hall is leading. The winner will be the hall with the highest improvement in recycling rate over the competition period.

Why we’re doing it We’re proud to be part of Bristol, a city working to become one of the most environmentally friendly in the world. Bristol’s residential recycling rate currently stands at 45%, with a target of 65%. At UWE, our average residential recycling rate is around 26%, and we have set an ambitious target of 70% across all waste streams. By taking part in the Recycling Challenge, you can help us reach these goals. Every correctly recycled item, whether a bottle, can, sheet of paper, or cardboard box brings us closer to our targets and helps cut carbon emissions.

Did you know?

  • One recycled plastic bottle can power a laptop for 30 minutes.
  • Five recycled plastic bottles can create enough insulating fibre to fill a ski jacket.
  • Recycling paper uses 70% less energy than making it new.

How to get involved

  • Sort recycling into plastics & cans, paper & card, glass, and food waste.
  • Keep items clean, dry, and free from contamination.
