Bristol Guide: International Supermarkets

Bristol is a wonderfully diverse city!

Whether your craving a delicious dish from your home country or you want to try something different, there are plenty of places that you can pick up international food.

While most of the big supermarkets sell a selection of international foods, there are also many specialist supermarkets easy to get to from Frenchay and Glenside campuses.

Wai Yee Hong Chinese Supermarket

Selling: Chinese and East Asian ; Thai, Malay, Singaporean, Korean, Indonesian, Filipino and Japanese.

Wai Yee Hong is a family-run Chinese cash & carry and supermarket, they pride themselves in 'stocking authentic Oriental products and brands – exactly what you will find in kitchens throughout the Orient'

How to get there: Take the 46 towards the city from Frenchay or Glenside.

Alfu International Supermarket

Selling: / Middle Eastern / Turkish / Asian

They have a good selection of fresh fruit and veg, chilled goods, tinned good, spices and ingredients, there is also and a halal butcher onsite and they sell a good selection of organic foods. Alfu international has a dessert counter/coffee shop selling baklava, cakes and Turkish coffee. Yum!

Daily Asian Food Store

Selling: Asian 

Daily Asian Food Store is a friendly family run Asian grocery shop. It may be small, but it's got a big selection of quality ingredients. 

Location: 758 Fishponds Road Bristol, BS16 3UA 

How to get there: Take the 46 towards the city from Frenchay or Glenside. It's at the top of Fishponds so you could walk. 

Polski Smak 

Selling: Polish / Eastern European 

Location:  711 Fishponds Road, Fishponds, BRISTOL, BS16 3UH

How to get there: Take the 46 towards the city from Frenchay or Glenside. It's quite near to campus so you could walk or cycle. 

BRB Caribbean Supermarket

Selling: Caribbean food, ingredients and drinks from across the islands.

Easton and St Paul's the main hubs for Bristol's Caribbean communities. Most shops stock plantains, hardo bread, spices and more, but BRB is your one stop shop. 

Location: 234 Stapleton Road, Easton, BS5 0NT

How to get there: Take the 46 towards the city from Frenchay or Glenside. Or from the city, head up Old Market towards Easton. BRB is close to the bottom of St Mark's Road.

Bristol Sweet Mart

Selling: Global foods, Asian, Afro-Caribbean, Organic foods

My favourite they have a good selection of fruit and veg, herb and spices and ingredients. The deli counter sells some of the best Indian sweets, snack and curries in the city.  

Location: 71-82 St Marks Rd, Easton, BS5 6JH 

How to get there: Take the 46 towards the city from Frenchay or Glenside. You'll need to get off the bus at Stapleton Road railway station and walk up Berwick Road to find St Mark's Road. 

Masala Bazaar

Selling: Halal produce and Indian, Pakistani and Asian foods

Masala Bazaar specialises in halal products including fresh, butchered meat and poultry, bulk rices and pulses, and Asian snacks

How to get there: Take the 46 towards the city. Get off the buss at Stapleton Road railway station.

Kalahari Moon

Selling: African and South African produce, drinks and ready to eat food

Tucked away in the covered stalls of St Nicholas Market, you can find Kalahari Moon. They opened up shop in 2005 with the intention of connecting Southern Africans by providing a “home from home”, organising functions such as braais, and supporting other community events.

Location: St Nicholas Market, 88-91 Covered Market, BS1 1JQ

How to get there: Get any bus towards the city centre (the Metrobuses are the quickest from Frenchay). St Nicholas Market is just up from the main centre bus stop.
