Staying Safe in Accommodation

How to make sure your home is secure

Living in accommodation is often people's first experience of independent living. Some people might take to it like a duck to water, and others might be a bit more apprehensive. Whichever camp you fall into, below are some tips to make sure your home is safe and secure.

  • Keep your keys/key card on you at all times. This way you will always be able to access your home and not be locked out. If you are locked out, come to a Customer Service desk and we'll find a solution.
  • Don't keep your key with anything with your address on it. If you lose both, the person who finds it will know where you live. They might be harmless, but it's not worth taking the risk.
  • Lock your bedroom whenever you leave the flat/house. It's very unlikely that you are broken into on campus, but just in case, lock your bedroom door to keep your belongings safe.
  • Have your Student ID on you at all times. Occasionally we might ask to see it as part of our security checks. Please show it willingly. We're not picking on you, we just have to check to keep everyone safe.
  • In return, you can ask to see any UWE Bristol's Staff ID. All of our staff and contractors will carry ID on them at all times to prove who we are. These cards will look the same as your Student ID, but are green for staff and yellow for contractors.
  • Report any issues there and then. Even if it's happening at 2am, our Security team are there to answer your call. Phone 0117 328 6404 (it's also on the back of your Student ID card) any time of day or night.
