The UWE Inter-hall Recycling Challenge is officially underway, and we’ve had our first set of results in since the competition launched during Green Week in November.
We’ve looked at recycling data across all student accommodation halls, comparing October and November 2025. While many halls saw a small drop in recycling rates in November (a common trend as term gets busier), there are already some strong performers leading the way.
Current Leaderboard (November results)
- Quantock
- Purdown
- Mendip & Brecon
These halls are currently setting the pace, well done to everyone living there. But remember: this competition is based on improvement, not perfection. With monthly updates running until March 2026, there is plenty of time for every hall to climb the leaderboard.
Where are we at overall?
Early data shows that recycling performance across halls has dipped slightly since October. That’s not unusual at this point in the academic year, assessments, deadlines, and winter routines all make it easier for recycling to slip down the priority list.
The good news? Small changes make a big difference:
- Sorting items correctly
- Keeping recycling clean and dry
- Making sure recycling actually reaches the right bins (remember to put your recycling either directly into the recycling bins or in a clear plastic bag)
Every improvement in behaviour helps your hall’s score and pushes UWE closer to its 70% recycling target.
Why this still matters
Right now, UWE’s average residential recycling rate is well below where it needs to be, but that’s why this competition exists. Other cities and universities have shown that friendly competition, visibility, and student action can rapidly improve recycling rates.
What happens next?
- Monthly leaderboard updates will continue throughout the competition
- Your hall can still move up the rankings with improved recycling in December, January, and beyond
- The winning hall at the end of March will be crowned Recycling Champions and rewarded with a pizza party
Need help recycling correctly?
If you’re unsure what goes where, you’re not alone, and help is available! You can find clear guidance on:
- What materials can be recycled at UWE
- How to get everyone involved
Let’s keep the challenge going. Whether your hall is currently leading or trailing, everyone still has a chance to win. Check the leaderboard, talk to your flatmates, and help your hall climb the rankings before the next update.
