A celebration of hand-drawn masterpieces

Hi, I'm Austin! These movies have a lot of sentimental value to me because my siblings and I grew up watching them. But I believe movies, and particularly stories, have the power to inspire, educate, and create connections with people, which is what these films have done for me. Allow me to provide context on why perhaps you may enjoy coming to one of your screenings.

Who are Studio Ghibli?

Studio Ghibli are a legendary animation studio, that has won two Academy Awards and a Golden Globe. The studio is deeply rooted in Japanese heritage and renowned for it's breath-taking, hand-drawn animation.

Its films have captivated audiences worldwide, elevating animated storytelling to an art form. The studio’s signature art style is iconic, rich with intricate details, and masterful storytelling with universal themes about nature, the environment, love, and family.

It has influenced generations of creators while bringing Japanese animation to global recognition. Much of this acclaim is credited to the visionary work of Hayao Miyazaki, whose storytelling depth and artistic brilliance have set a high standard in the animation industry.

In an era where 3D animation dominates, with studios like Disney and DreamWorks steering away from traditional techniques, Studio Ghibli remains steadfast in preserving 2D animation. Rather than conforming to industry trends, the studio continues to embrace its hand-crafted approach, something that many fans believe makes it truly unique.

Our goal:

Despite their international acclaim, Studio Ghibli films are rarely shown in cinemas anymore, especially in Bristol. To share these cinematic treasures with more people, we’ve created Student Life Movie Premieres—a cosy, immersive screening experience right here on campus.

Our goal is to recreate the warmth and charm of a traditional cinema in our way. With surround sound speakers, delicious popcorn, hot drinks and snacks, and an inviting setup featuring beanbags and blankets, we ensure a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere for everyone.

This initiative is particularly special for students who have never had the chance to experience these films before, allowing them to discover the magic of Ghibli for the first time. Following the overwhelmingly positive response to Spirited Away and Howl’s Moving Castle, we’re excited to continue bringing more of these beloved films to our student community.

Whether you’re a long time fan or new to the world of Studio Ghibli, our screenings offer a perfect opportunity to unwind, connect with like-minded individuals, and appreciate the beauty of hand-drawn animation. And the best part is it's all free!
